NCLB - No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind education reform initiative was passed in January 2002. The law is actually the reauthorization of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It gives parents a variety of tools and extra support to help them make the best educational decisions for their children. It also impacts our school district by focusing on testing, teacher quality and academic improvement.

The law allows parents at schools which receive federal Title I funds to request more information about their school's performance and the professional qualifications of their child's classroom teachers and educational assistants. The school district has the responsibility to give you that information in a timely manner if you request it.

Here's the specific information you can request:

How your child's school has performed on statewide tests. The subject and grade levels that your child's teacher is licensed to teach by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), as well as their college and graduate school background. If there are educational assistants working in the classroom with your child, we will also provide information about their educational background and professional experience.

We are proud of the educators who work in our school district and we know that they are dedicated to providing quality learning experiences for every student. If you would like to receive this information about any of your child's teachers, we encourage you to contact the school office.

The law also says that students who are attending a school that is not making adequate yearly progress (AYP) can receive priority consideration during our school choice process. Currently, a school's AYP status is based solely on its performance on the state's Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment testing.

However, our district's accountability system is broader and more complete than the state's accountability system. The district measures individual school progress against district standards for student achievement, school climate, attendance and suspension rates, and gifted/talented programming. Points are assigned to each indicator to show whether or not the school is meeting the standard for that indicator. The average of the combined indicators in a school's overall point total can range from 1 (low) to 3 (average) to 5 (high).
